J. David Vineyard

J. David Vineyard is the heart of R|A Family Wines and the foundation for everything we do. It carries a name with deep personal meaning. J. David was Rob’s father, and the youngest members of the family call him “Pappy.” It honors the Andrews family’s farming roots and anchors the project in family and the land.

A DIstinct Pocket of
The Rocks District

The vineyard sits in a parcel of The Rocks District near the town of Milton-Freewater, within the Walla Walla Valley AVA. The soil here was shaped by river flows over time, concentrating rocks into pockets and leaving dense exposed cobble across the surface. Radiant heat from these stones brings intensity and definition to the fruit. The vineyard is also naturally protected by neighboring apple orchards, which help buffer it from cold temperatures. It’s unmistakably The Rocks, with its own signature.

Built With Intention

J. David Vineyard is a true estate project, built to express a singular place. After identifying the site, we removed the original vines and replanted from the ground up, aligning every decision with the long-term goal of building a focused Syrah program. It was a deliberate commitment of time and resources, made with the understanding that you only get one chance each year to translate what the vineyard gives.

The Vineyard Leads

Our philosophy is simple: start with the best raw ingredients, then earn the result through work. Matt personally farms J. David Vineyard and makes the key decisions throughout the growing season. Farming is hands-on and quality-driven, with a willingness to experiment and take risks in service of purity and site expression. There is a clear vision for style, but it is always in conversation with what the vineyard offers each year. J. David Vineyard is the guide and the core of the R|A Family Wines story.
